University Express - The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

University Express - The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

We owe immense gratitude to Henrietta Lacks for her 1951 contribution to science that continues to help in the battle against cancer. But did she know? Did she give consent? Was she compensated? Only after twenty years did her family learn of the existence of the HeLa immortalized cell line, taken from Mrs. Lacks after she died of cancer. Learn how this event led to privacy and patients’ rights policies. Instructor: Theresa Wiater, Retired Teacher, Clarence Center Elementary School
