150 Years Ago: Mark Twain and His Buffalo of 1869
August of 2019 marked the 150th anniversary of Mark Twain signing papers to become managing editor and co-owner of a thriving newspaper in Buffalo, The Morning Express.
This illustrated presentation will describe Twain’s journalistic and personal activities in the fall of 1869 and for the next 15 months of his residency in Buffalo, set within the historical context of his new home--a city whose economy and population were booming. Twain’s Buffalo period laid important groundwork for his literary career, including inspiration for his American classic fifteen years later, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
